The First African Methodist Episcopal Church, (FAME) celebrates 150 years of service on Friday, November 14, 2008.  The gala will be held at the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel at 10th and Broadway Streets.  Festivities start at 6:00 p.m. with the Pastor?s Reception, followed by dinner and the awards program at 7:00 p.m.
Honorary co-chairs include: Dr. and Mrs. Harold R. Mayberry, The Honorable Ronald V. Dellums and First Lady Cynthia Dellums, City Councilmember Desley Brooks, and Actor Delroy and Mrs. Nashormeh Lindo.
Marc H. Morial, President of the National Urban League, will give the keynote address.  In a career spanning 25 years, Morial has served as an entrepreneur, lawyer, professor, legislator, mayor, and Louisiana state senator.
As President of the National Urban League since 2003, he has been the primary catalyst for an era of change — a transformation for the nearly 100-year-old civil rights organization.  He expanded the League?s work around an empowerment agenda, redefining civil rights in the 21st century with a renewed emphasis on closing the economic gaps between racial and class lines.
Under his stewardship the League has had record fundraising success, securing the Better Business Bureau nonprofit certification, and establishing the NUL as a leading national nonprofit.   His creativity has led to initiatives such as the Urban Youth Empowerment Program to assist young adults in securing jobs, and Entrepreneurship Centers to help the growth of small businesses.  Also, Morial created the National Urban League Empowerment Fund, which has pumped almost $200 million into urban impact businesses including minority business through both debt and equity investments.
This celebration will honor three outstanding individuals for their hard work, leadership and contribution to the community enriching the lives of others.  Our honorees include:
