The national tour of Dreamgirls began its run in the Bay Area Aug. 25 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre.  Based on successful R&B acts, such as the Supremes, Shirelles, Jackie Wilson, and James Brown, Dreamgirls brings to life the tragedy and triumphs of a 1960s girl group as it breaks into the entertainment business.
With an all-star cast of recording artist and actors, the show will deliver an amazing experience each and every night. Award-winning singer, actor and songwriter Chester Gregory is one of the many acclaimed cast members.
Gregory, a native of Gary, Indiana, made his New York debut as Jackie Wilson in “The Jackie Wilson Story.” He has also featured in the Broadway musicals Hairspray, Cry-Baby and Tarzan and performed for his idol Michael Jackson before he passed away.
“To perform for someone who has inspired me so much was just an amazing experience,” he said
In Dreamgirls, Gregory plays the role of James “Thunder” Early “We (in the cast) spend so much time together we are like a family, and we really just enjoy what we do,” he said.
Gregory recalls his audition, being one of the first people cast, and how it felt knowing that once again he would get a chance to do what it is that he loves to do. He encourages Bay Area residents to come out see a memorable show.
“Jimmy is a character, and I have to give my all to that character. It is my job to give the audience a show each night,” he said.
Dreamgirls will run at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre, 445 Geary St, from Aug. 25 to Sept. 26. For show information or to purchase tickets visit www.shnsf.com/shows/dreamgirls. Ticket prices range from $30-$99.
