Emmelene “Mamalene” Thomas

Emmelene “Mamalene” Thomas died of natural causes on Dec. 12, in Oakland, 100 years old at the time of her passing.
Thomas was born on Dec. 26, 1909 to Walter and Harriett Johnson in Baton Rouge, LA.   She married Joseph Thornton, Sr., in New Orleans in 1929.  To this union five children were born.
She moved to Oakland in 1950, divorced, and married Ulysses A. (U.A.) Thomas. The couple enjoyed a loving union until her husband’s death in 1998.
She was preceded in death by three of her children: Norma Thornton-Martin in 1949, Joseph Thornton in1981 and Walter Thornton in 1997.  Thomas is survived by her children Byron Thornton, Dr. Shirley Thornton and her stepdaughter Marion Thomas Jiles; her grandchildren, Rene Martin, David and Michele Thornton, Joseph and Ricky Thornton, and Delra Hayes; 11 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Bess Thornton; and daughter-in-law and caretaker Francoise Thornton; her surrogate grand-daughter and loving friend Zakiya Jendayi; and her caretaker Donald Toles.
She was grateful for the friendship of her sister-in law Amelia Thornton-Johnson and for the loving friendship and care she received from Dr. Kimberly Hicks, Pamela Davis and Marilyn Mackel. She was also thankful for the love of her dogs, Buster, Star and Ginger.
A funeral service was held Thursday at Allen Temple Baptist Church. Viewing and visitation was held at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.
