Evans big night not enough for win

Sacramento, CA – Losing has become consistent for the Sacramento Kings.  It’s definitely not something they want to get used to as they continue to find ways to overcome it.  But when the Los Angeles Clippers came to town they handed them their twenty-third loss of the season.

It came down to Tyreke Evans at the free throw line, he was fouled with 1.9 seconds left in the game after attempting to make a three-point shot.  Evans made the first two free throws but missed the last one for the tie.  DeMarcus Cousins rebounded the ball and missed the tip-in.  Although Evans had a big night it wasn’t enough to prevent the 100-99 loss against the Clippers.

“We got more shot attempts then they did,” coach Paul Westphal said.  “If we would’ve won, they could say they lost the game on turnovers – we had 10 turnovers and they had 22 turnovers.”  “They beat us on the boards, it was a close game, a one point game.”

Playing with a sore left foot, Tyreke is considering surgery to reduce the pain from plantar fasciitis that was diagnosed in his foot.  No one would know he was struggling based on how well he kept the Kings in the game.  Evans scored a game-high 32 points and played aggressively throughout the night.

Unfortunately one player can’t so it all!  Defense is the key to winning games and this becomes the biggest challenge for Sacramento in preventing the opponent from hitting three’s outside such as Eric Gordon who stayed “hot” all night.

“I’m letting my shots just come to me,” Gordon said.  “Teams sometimes try to go under a screen so I won’t be able to get to the basket.”  “So, it’s up to me to knock down the outside shots.”

Gordon was 6-for-7 behind the 3-point line and grabbed six rebounds before finishing with a team-high 31 points to match Evans great performance.  Blake Griffith added 24 points and 14 rebounds.  But Griffith was most remembered for his foul on Cousins after he tipped the ball in but no call was made before the ball was hit out to Evans who had no time to throw up a shot before the buzzer went off to end the game.

“The ref didn’t call it so there is nothing I can do about it,” Cousins said.  “But I did get pulled down on the last possession…  It’s hard to swallow, we could have won that game.”
