Full of emotion, dancers blazed the stage at the Ross Dance Company 3rd Annual Bay Area Praise Dance Festival on Sunday, June 26, as church members, family, and friends assembled in the Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley. Leaping in faith, twirling in submission, dancers put on a live show of worship, and the spirit was undeniably present.
Performing music by Myron Butler, Karen Clark, Donald Lawrence and others, performers included the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Praise Fellowship Bible Church, and Passion for Christ, Covenant Worship Center, First Baptist, Erik Lee, Lauren Pitcher, and the Ross Dance Company. “Our praise dance festival is not just another event but it is an experience that brings the Bay Area community together to not only be satiated with powerful music and dance but to celebrate and be in the presence of the One who gives meaning to our lives,” said Dr. Tecsia Evans, Artistic Director and Founder of Ross Dance Company.
The festival kicked off on Saturday, June 25 with the Annual Bay Area Praise Dance Conference, offering workshops and choreography classes to over a 100 youth and adults at the Malonga Casquelourd Center. Performers shared their stories of praise and worship through dance at Julia Morgan, ending the show with a performance by Gospel rap artist, Transparent. He owned the stage with confidence, sharing his own inspirational story as the audience sung along. Praise Fellowship Bible Church, of Richmond, and F.A.M.E. Praise Dance Ministry, of Oakland, also walked away as the Voters’ Choice Winners at Sunday’s shows.
The Ross Dance Company is a professional touring contemporary praise and jazz company founded by Dwight and Dr. Tecsia Evans in August 2005. Ross strides to invite the audience into uplifting stories that connect with their mind, emotions and soul. It is Ross’ vision to give dancers who have a dream and a passion to dance to share their story.
The festival ends in Sacramento on Saturday July 16 at Veteran’s Memorial Theater (203 East 14th Street, Davis). Tickets for the Ross Dance Sacramento festival can be reserved by emailing tickets@rossdance.com or calling (510) 828-5760.
