Mayflower Community Chorus Performs “Feel the Spirit” Concert, Dec. 9-10
The Mayflower Community Chorus will present a “Feel the Spirit” concert on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10 at Marin Center Showcase Theater, and on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Church of Saint Raphael. Both locations are located in San Rafael.
The chorus will draw on the African-American musical heritage and will be praising, syncopating and call-and-responding to traditional spirituals such as “Deep River,” gospel songs such as “Come On Down” and “Great, Great Joy,” and a jazz “Kyrie” from “A Little Jazz Mass.”
Pop songs include “Seasons of Love” from the musical “Rent,” “Cool Yule” by Steve Allen, and U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” in a special adaptation by accompanist David Manley, A.D. “Candle in the Night” celebrates the Jewish holiday Hanukkah.
Jujuana ShaRon Williams will be the guest soloist, and is excited to work with the Chorus for the first time. She will perform “Joyful, Joyful,” “Lean on Me” and “Sound Over all Waters.”
Williams has been singing since she was four years old. She quickly expanded from singing in her church choir and to plays, musicals and bands, and currently sings in the Napata and the Chocolate Kisses band which performs all over the greater Bay Area. Williams has performed in Rent, Six Women With Brain Death, and Black Nativity.
The 50-voice Mayflower Community Chorus began at San Rafael’s Mayflower Inn 31 years ago. Over the past 12 years, Director Daniel Canosa has inspired the chorus to musical precision and emotional resonance. Marin Center Showcase Theater is located at 10 Avenue of the Flags in San Rafael. The Church of Saint Raphael is located at 1104 Fifth Ave., San Rafael.
Tickets are $20 general: $15 for senior 60 years and older and students from ages 9-18; and children 8 years and under are $5. For more information please call: 415-491-9110 or mayflowerchorus.org
