Giants lose, celebration on hold

October 4, 2010 Sports No Comments
San Francisco, CA – The sweet taste of victory will have to wait one more day.  After a horrible start from Matt Cain, the Giants celebration will be on hold at least one more day before they can clinch the National League West division. The San Diego Padres came in here tonight to take game one of the series, they defeated the Giants 6-4.  While San Francisco needs only one win to clinch, the Padres need to win two more games to reclaim the number one spot.  No one thought it would be an easy task and tonight proved it will be a battle until the end. Cain gave up three home runs that put San Diego up 6-0 by the fifth inning.  Ryan Ludwick hit a solo home run to leadoff the second frame.  Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the third to make it 4-0.  And Matt Stairs followed with a leadoff homer to start the fifth. “I just didn’t get it done and that’s the reason we lost tonight,” Cain said. The Giants didn’t resemble the team that swept Arizona, the mistakes were costly and once they rallied back late in the sixth it was too late.  The one opportunity San Francisco had to close the gap within one ended with a poor decision from Freddy Sanchez bottom of the ninth. Padres closer Heath Bell opened the inning walking Sanchez, next at bat was Aubrey Huff who hit a fly ball deep to right field.  Sanchez took off to second assuming the ball would bounce off the wall but instead it landed in Will Venable’s glove.  He was tagged out at first and that play ended the game. “It wasn’t a smart base running move on my part,” said Sanchez.  “Obviously it would have been nice to see what happened if I had not done what I did in the ninth.” The Giants didn’t give up, bottom of the fifth pinch hitter Cody Ross went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored in both the fifth and sixth innings.  Pat Burrell also doubled in the sixth and Aaron Rowand hit a 2-run homer to cut San Diego’s lead to three.  Rowand hit his 2nd career home run and entered the game with only one hit with a previous 24 at-bats against left-handers. “This group doesn’t give in,” said Burell.  “We’re going to fight and I think if you would have asked any of us in Spring Training if you were going to be up two games with one to go, I think everybody would take it.”  “I know it’s rough because we lost the game but we’re still in a good position.” Written by: Malaika Bobino
