Heading to Texas 2-0, Giants shutout Rangers

October 30, 2010 Sports No Comments
San Francisco, CA – There’s the saying in baseball “anything can happen.”  Tonight the Giants continued to control the game with their at-bats and pitching.  The duel that many expected from Tim Lincecum and Cliff Lee happened in Game 2. No Cy Young Award listed behind either pitcher’s name but both Matt Cain and C.J. Wilson pitched a scoreless game until the fifth frame.  Cain dominated leaving the Texas Rangers puzzled once again. The Giants shutout the Rangers 9-0 and made this the highest scoring World Series of all-time in two games.  The last team to score 20 or more runs in back-to-back World Series was Anaheim who totaled 21 runs in Games 2 and 3 in 2002 against the Giants. “We’re going back to their place, they’re going to be fired up,” said Aubrey Huff.  “Their fans have been waiting a long time for this too.”  “They’re going to be loud so, we have to go in there, take the first one and worry about the next one.”  “All they have to do is win the next one and they’re back in it.” Cain reached new heights allowing no runs in 7 2/3 innings.  His performance at the mound was beyond the best pitching we’ve seen in the postseason.  Earning the name Mr. October of all mounds-men, the righty became the first starting pitcher in Major League history to allow zero earned runs in three consecutive postseason outings. “We put ourselves in a good situation,” Cain said.  “I’ve been trying to work ahead in the count and must acknowledge how well Posey and I collaborated out there tonight.”  “We’ve got to take our confidence and some of the good approaches that we’ve had in these last two games to Texas.” Edgar Renteria went deep on a fly ball to left field to get begin the Giants scoring spree bottom of the fifth frame.  By the seventh Juan Uribe hit a RBI single giving them a 2-0 lead.  The Rangers were 0-7 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-9 in the game.  Wilson was able to match Cain pitch for pitch except for the fastball to Renteria. Due to an open blister on the middle finger of his left hand, C.J. left the game in the seventh.  When the bullpen took over bottom of the eighth, Texas fell apart.  After Darren O’Day issued two strike outs to both Andres Torres and Freddy Sanchez, Buster Posey singled on a line drive to second baseman Ian Kinsler with two outs. Derek Holland replaced O’Day and that’s when the Giants scored a total of seven runs in one inning.  Four relievers combined a total of four hits, four walks including two that loaded the bases. “Well, the challenge is we have to go home and we have to get a win,” manager Ron Washington said.  “Colby Lewis has been outstanding for us and we’re certainly confident when we get back to Texas we can turn things around.” Written by: Malaika Bobino
